Members of staff who work alone at remote locations on BRE premises or off-site, face additional risks as there may be no one else there to help in an emergency. Therefore we have guidance and procedures to facilitate communication in lone working circumstances (refer to our Lone and Remote Working Operational Procedure in the BRE staff area of this site for further details).
In remote locations, as elsewhere, you should never engage in activity that is unsafe and may result in harm to you or someone else.
Q: You are working off site doing some fire testing. You realise that you have forgotten some of the mandatory personal protective equipment. It is impractical to go back to BRE as the site where you are working is over four hours’ drive away from your BRE base.
Do you go ahead and perform the testing without the necessary equipment?
A: NO. At BRE, we put health, safety and wellbeing above all else. You should never engage in activity that is unsafe and may result in harm to you or someone else. In this particular situation, you should try to get the necessary equipment at the site. If this is not possible, go back to your BRE base and reschedule the testing.
